UK trademark registration fees and process

Process

1. Search UKIPO trademark records.
2. Confirm classes and goods or services wording.
3. File the online application.
4. Wait for examination and publication.

Fees and class choices

Rates effective from April 1, 2026 are GBP 205 for an online application covering one class and GBP 60 for each additional class. A three-class online application therefore starts at GBP 325. Paper filing, Right Start, opposition, and professional services use different fees.

Timeline and publication

UKIPO examines the application and identifies relevant earlier marks before publication. If accepted, the application is normally published for a two-month opposition period. Objections, extensions, threatened opposition, or formal opposition can extend the timeline.

Documents and decisions to prepare

• Applicant name, legal status, address, and contact details.
• The exact word mark or design representation.
• Goods and services terms grouped in the correct classes.
• Priority details where an earlier qualifying filing is claimed.
• A search record covering identical and similar UK marks.

Common refusal and opposition risks

• A descriptive or non-distinctive mark.
• Goods and services wording that is too broad or unclear.
• Conflict with an earlier UK or applicable international mark.
• Assuming an EU filing automatically protects the UK.

UK and EU are separate

New EU trademark filings do not cover the UK. If both the UK and EU matter, evaluate separate UK and EU filing routes.
